Creating Inclusive Spaces | Nathan Armstrong

In today's fast-paced world, mental health awareness is more important than ever, especially for college students who face numerous challenges and pressures. Nathan, a 21-year-old psychology and communication studies student discovered Let's Choose Love through his mother's suggestion and saw it as an opportunity to make a positive impact on his college campus. With the support of the Let’s Choose Love grant, Nathan embarked on a journey to create the first Inclusive Game Night in partnership with the psychology club to not only spread mental health awareness but also foster connections and friendships among students.

While the grant amount of one thousand dollars may not seem substantial, Nathan understood that with careful planning and resource management, it could go a long way. He utilized the funds to organize an event that focused on mental health awareness and provided information about potential job opportunities in the field of psychology. The event also included an inclusive game night where students of all backgrounds could gather, have fun, and relax.

The event received a positive response, with 25 to 30 people attending—a remarkable turnout for the psychology department. With the grant funding, he has purchased a variety of games to ensure future events are engaging and welcoming. Nathan's vision is to create a safe and inclusive space where students can forge new connections, make friends, and prioritize their mental well-being.

Organizing an event like this was a new experience for Nathan, and he encountered several challenges along the way. From coordinating with his psychology club members to secure event venues and catering to managing communication with different stakeholders, the process tested his organizational and communication skills. Through his journey with Let's Choose Love, Nathan gained invaluable insights and skills. He realized the importance of early planning, effective communication, and collaboration with like-minded organizations. Nathan also recognized the significance of advertising and leveraging social media platforms to reach a broader audience. These lessons will serve as a foundation for future endeavors and enable him to make an even greater impact.

Encouraged by the success of the first event, Nathan aims to host inclusive game nights regularly in the coming semester to provide students with a safe and welcoming environment to foster connections and friendships. He aims to collaborate with other clubs on campus, such as Stonewall, which raises awareness about LGBTQ+ issues on campus. By partnering with diverse organizations, Nathan envisions creating events that foster inclusivity and allow everyone to feel comfortable and welcome. Ultimately, his goal is to help individuals from all backgrounds forge connections and cultivate a supportive community.
